The worst kept secret in the computer industry leaped out of the box Tuesday at the consumer electronics show in Las Vegas. Steve Jobs unveiled the latest and greatest version of the IPod -- the iPhone. And the fanfare like that is usually reserved for the slaying of fatted calves and jubilees. As much as I detest cell phones, including my trusty Crackberry, I want an iPhone. I don't really detest my Crackberry. It's very handy tool. While it's handy, because it is a Nextel, it doesn't do SMS. The lack of SMS makes it very difficult to query Google. As a music player, it's a bit big to use at the YMCA. I would keep my trusty tiny 4 gig model. Most net enabled cell phones make great water coolers. Cell phones work great as cell phones. When you try to build an interface to do something it doesn't normally do, here comes trouble. Jobs says it is Internet and wi-fi capable. To me it means that it may be capable of replacing the Crackberry. I don't want to check my Road Runner e-mail during a break on a 50-mile cycle ride. I go on 50-mile cycle rides to escape e-mail. But if I'm out in the middle of nowhere, it would be great to be able to Google a location to get a cold bottle of water. More on this later when I get my evaluation iPhone. |
